As parents, it’s understandable that we want our child to be physically fit. But, we also have to remember that sports are not just for the physically fit. Of course, children need to be physically fit in order to be successful in sports, but that’s only part of the reason they play sports. Children who play sports are not only physically fit, they are also mentally fit! The exercise and the excitement of sports are a great way to build self-esteem, foster teamwork and friendship and teach them some valuable lessons about life.
Many parents seem to think that sports are more than just physical activity. They think that sports teaches our children some valuable lessons. They believe that sports prepare children for the real world. However, science has proven that the lessons taught through sports are the same lessons taught through other activities and play.
Children are very much like sponges. They absorb what we as parents teach them through our actions and speech. They mirror our feelings and attitudes. They learn to take risks, they learn to be responsible, to try new things, to make decisions, and they learn how to work with others.
Everyone is talking about childhood obesity. It’s one of the biggest health problems we face today. Over 40% of children in our country are overweight or obese. It’s a problem that needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, many parents seem to think that the only way to address it is by taking their children out of their sports teams. This is not the answer.

Let’s not keep our children out of sports because we think that’s the solution to their weight problem. Sports teach our children important lessons that will help them in the rest of their lives. They are also a lot of fun!
